Hoochie Coochie Man Hoochie Coochie Man, written by the legendary Willie Dixon for McKinley Morganfield aka Muddy Waters (recorded 1954, chess records, Dixon also played the bass), is a real Blues classic. Little Walter played the incredible harp, and this song is a good example how Waters moved from the classical Delta Blues form to his interpretation of the Chicago Blues style, leaving the traditional 12 bar song structure, adding stops and improvisations. Hoochie Coochie Man is a 16 bar Blues in the key of A. EC played it very close to the original, letting his harp player doing most solo work. Let's start with the intro - a few notes only, but a very characteristic "Here I am"! There are several ways to play the intro, they can be played together or changed during the song. The main 5 note figure always ends up to A or B, both notes from the A chord. Some variations are: I------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I I------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I I------------2--------------------------0-0-1-2---------bass style-------------------I I-----0-2----2-----------5-2----------2----------------------------------------------I I--/3-----3--0--------/3------3--0------------------------------0--------------------I I--Muddy's style------EC's style------nice "overdub"----0-3-0-3----------------------I 0:00 This theme (with the corresponding A7 chord) is the same for the first 7 bars. With the 8th bar (...what's this all about..) we start a heavy strumming over the A7 chord. The chords for all verses are: All A7: The Gypsy Woman told my mother, before I was born, you gotta boy child comin', he's gonna be a son of a gun, he gonna make pretty womens, jump and shout, A7 A7 then the world wanna know, what's it all about. D7 A7 But you know I'm here, everybody knows I'm here, E7 D7 A7 well I'm the Hoochie Coochie Man, everybody knows I'm here. A nice bass line for the D7 and A7 chord (after ...but you know I'm here): D7 A7 I-----------------------------------------------I I-----------------------------------------------I I----------2-5-5-2---2--------------------------I I--0-0-3h4---------4--------------2-5-5-2---2---I I-------------------------0-0-3h4---------4-----I I-----------------------------------------------I During the harmonica solo you can play using the A minor Blues scale. The final chord sliding down from A9, played at the 12th fret.
